Because of the growth in social media usage, people spend hours each day on various social media platforms, sending messages and images, tweeting, changing status, like, and commenting on various social updates. The issue is that social media exposes individuals, especially the younger generation, to a wide range of intriguing activities and happenings. Another component of social media usage has been proven to enhance social anxiety for certain people. Previous study has shown that the number of social networking sites utilized and the time spent on them may be modifiers of anxiety and depressive symptoms. This study aims to determine the relationship between social media usage among students of Universiti Malaysia Sabah with symptoms of anxiety and depression. A total of 160 students have answered the questionnaire for this study. This study can help to see how much social media has affected the students of Universiti Malaysia Sabah in terms of anxiety and depression. The result of this study can be used to check on the students’ anxiety and depression level and help to create an intervention to help the students with the problem they have faced. There is a significant relationship between social media usage among females with anxiety. It is also noted that social media usage among both male and female have significant relationship with depression.
2024-12-06T00:00:00+08:00Copyright (c) 2024 https://jurcon.ums.edu.my/ojums/index.php/JPKS/article/view/5703The Positive Influence of Nasyid Music in Enhancing Mental Well-being: A Preliminary Review2024-12-05T14:14:43+08:00Ismail Maidinmaelz822@gmail.com
Despite this, local and international students exhibit a reluctance to seek psychological help, revealing a gap in addressing mental health needs. Self-stigma emerges as a significant barrier to proactive psychological help-seeking attitudes. Cultural nuances further complicate attitudes toward seeking psychological help. To further understand the interplay between self-stigma and psychological help-seeking attitudes among different cultures and genders, a cross-cultural comparison study was conducted. Eight universities consisting of four public and four private universities in Malaysia were chosen as the sample population of this study. The instruments that were used were the Attitudes towards Professional Psychological Help-Seeking Scale -Short Form (ATSPPH-SF) and the Self-Stigma of Seeking Help (SSOSH). Results revealed that self-stigma negatively predicted psychological help-seeking attitudes among university students, particularly among international students. Furthermore, male international students were more open to seek professional psychological help while female international students placed more value and need on psychological help. Overall, the psychological help-seeking attitudes remained low and insignificant across the samples. Therefore, integrating cultural perspectives into mental health interventions may help build trust and provide supportive environments that may encourage positive psychological help-seeking attitudes.
2024-12-09T00:00:00+08:00Copyright (c) 2024 https://jurcon.ums.edu.my/ojums/index.php/JPKS/article/view/5719Attitude Towards Mental Illness and Barriers in Seeking Psychological Help Among Psychology and Non-psychology Students 2024-12-09T11:21:13+08:00Getrude Cosmas getrudec@ums.edu.my
University students’ attitude towards mental health and barriers in seeking help can be affected by numerous factors. Those factors include students’ knowledge of mental health and awareness of obstacles in seeking help. To explore the phenomenon, a study was conducted to examine a comparison between psychology and non-psychology students on their attitude towards mental health and barriers in seeking help. A total of 236 students in one of the local universities in Sabah took part in this study. A study revealed that there was no difference between the two groups of students (psychology vs. non-psychology programs) in terms of their attitudes towards mental illness. However, in terms of care and barriers in seeking psychological help, the study showed that psychology students showed less barriers in seeking psychological help and each of its component (i.e., fear of being stigmatized, trust towards mental health professionals, difficulties in self-disclosure, perceived devaluation and lack of knowledge) in comparison with non-psychology students. Due to these circumstances, it is assumed that knowledge and awareness on mental illness may reduce barriers in seeking psychological help and increase participants’ knowledge on care and treatment of mental illness. Therefore, mental health programs/campaigns should be implemented continuously as an effective way to tackle participants’ barriers in seeking psychological help.
2024-12-13T00:00:00+08:00Copyright (c) 2024 https://jurcon.ums.edu.my/ojums/index.php/JPKS/article/view/5788Psychometric Properties of The Career Decision Self-Efficacy Scale-Short Form (CDSES-SF) In A Sample Of Malaysia University Students 2024-12-16T11:06:08+08:00Chua Bee Seokchuabs@ums.edu.my
This study aims to examine the psychometric properties of the Career Decision Self-Efficacy Scale-Short Form (CDSES-SF) among Malaysian University Students. The research specifically focused on evaluating the inventory's reliability, validity, and conducting an item analysis. Data were collected from a sample of 299 (97 females, 202 males) respondents consisting of students from Universiti Malaysia Sabah. The survey was administered through Google Forms and disseminated via WhatsApp. CDSES-SF comprises 25 items to measure five dimensions which are self-appraisal, gathering occupational information, goal selection, making plans, and problem solving. The reliability of the instrument was tested using internal consistency (Cronbach’s Alpha). The effectiveness of each item in the instrument was tested using item-inter correlation. Test validity was measured through convergent validity to assess the correlation between different items of the same construct and concurrent validity to examine the correlations between CDSES-SF subscales and Self Value measure from Personal Life Values (PLV). The reliability for the total scale showed a good consistency with a Cronbach’s Alpha value of 0.93. All the subscales of CSDESE-SF had met the reliability criterion within the value of .70 except for Goal Selection (Cronbach's Alpha = 0.69). The item analysis revealed low to adequate internal consistency, with Cronbach's Alpha ranging from 0.152 to 0.678. The analysis also identified two items that require improvement to enhance the instrument's reliability. The convergent validity of the instrument was significantly and positively correlated with each subscale. The concurrent validity examined the positive and significant correlations between CDSES-SF subscales and Self Value measure from Personal Life Values (PLV). These findings contribute to the overall validation of CDSES-SF as a reliable instrument for assessing career-decision self-efficacy, emphasizing its utility in research and practical applications.
2024-12-16T00:00:00+08:00Copyright (c) 2024 https://jurcon.ums.edu.my/ojums/index.php/JPKS/article/view/5792Parenting Style As Predictors Of Antisocial Behaviour Among Youth In Selangor, Malaysia: Emotional Intelligence As Mediaton2024-12-16T15:18:06+08:00AFIQAH AMRAN SHAHP124752@siswa.ukm.edu.my
: Despite numerous efforts made by the local government, educational institution, and social community, antisocial behaviours are still rampant in society, as can be seen from the current statistics that stated that 65% of substance abusers in Malaysia are youth. The main objective of this study is to investigate the mediation effect of emotional intelligence to the relationship between parenting style and antisocial behaviours among youth in Selangor, Malaysia. 338 youth (mean age of 20.63 years old) participated in this quantitative study, where they answered 39 items that was derived from Parental Authority Questionnaire, Subtypes of Antisocial Behaviors, and Wong and Law Emotional Intelligence Scale. Pearson’s correlation coefficients, stepwise multiple regression analysis, and Hayer’s PROCESS macro software was used to analyse the data. This study found that emotional intelligence is a significant mediator to the relationship between parenting styles and antisocial behaviour among youth in Selangor, Malaysia, suggesting that parenting style can predicts emotional intelligence, which in turn predict antisocial behaviour among youth. Thus, this finding shows the importance of applying emotional intelligence into youth, and intervention programme that aims for parents to make changes to their parenting style can be prove effective in helping to reduce antisocial behaviours among youth, especially for authoritarian parents
2024-12-16T00:00:00+08:00Copyright (c) 2024 https://jurcon.ums.edu.my/ojums/index.php/JPKS/article/view/5814Konflik dan Penyelesaian dalam Menjaga Kualiti Pendidikan Pelajar Selepas Pemansuhan UPSR dan Peningkatan Tahap Silibus2024-12-18T14:47:15+08:00Mazni Mustaphamasni@ums.edu.my
The abolishment of UPSR, in conjunction with the rise of syllabus complexity represents a substantial shift, which is still in adaptation phase among primary school educators and parents, as well as students. Previous research on the effectiveness of utilizing Pentaksiran Bilik Darjah (PBD) showed unsatisying reactions among the educators and parents due to being doubtful on the system's legitimacy, uncertainty on implementation, and insufficient skills in managing the system effectively. A semi-structured interview has been carried out on three primary school teachers and three parents of Year 6 pupils in a few states of Malaysia. Results showed that parents were still unclear about the motive behind the abolishment of UPSR and the extent to which the new assessment (PBD) could measure the academic achievement of their children. The teachers, on the other hand, viewed this transformation as undeniably accepted and aware of the challenges that they need to face, i.e. the modifications to the delivery techniques in teaching and learning (T&L) so that align with the advancement of syllabus. Eventhough the abolishment of UPSR would decrease workloads and mental health of students, parents’ readiness is still at low level. Hence, effective processes of T&L are critical to ensure a better quality of education in Malaysia.
2024-12-18T00:00:00+08:00Copyright (c) 2024 https://jurcon.ums.edu.my/ojums/index.php/JPKS/article/view/5816Pengaruh Keseimbangan Kerja-Kehidupan Ke Atas Kesejahteraan Psikologi Polis Di Raja Malaysia (Pdrm) Di Musim Pandemik Covid-192024-12-18T14:59:33+08:00Mohd Dahlan A Malekdahlanam@ums.edu.my
The COVID-19 disease is a pandemic that has affected the entire world with an alarming infection rate. The spread of this pandemic has required the government to take drastic measures to curb the problem from further infecting the population. In this regard, the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) has played a vital role in assisting the government to control the spread of COVID-19. The objectives of this study are fourfold: to examine the relationship between work-life balance and the psychological well-being of PDRM personnel during the COVID-19 pandemic, to assess the impact of work-life balance on the psychological well-being of PDRM personnel, to identify the most influential aspect of work-life balance affecting psychological well-being among PDRM personnel, and to investigate gender differences in the influence of work-life balance on psychological well-being during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study adopts a quantitative research design with a non-probability sampling method. The target population consists of PDRM personnel who were on duty during the implementation of the Movement Control Order (MCO) in Malaysia. This group was selected because they were directly involved and experienced the actual challenges during the MCO. The sampling technique used is purposive sampling, with a total sample size of 364 respondents. The instrument used in this study is a questionnaire, and the data were analyzed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS).The findings of this study reveal a significant relationship and impact between work-life balance and the psychological well-being of PDRM personnel during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, there is no significant difference between genders in the influence of work-life balance on psychological well-being among PDRM personnel. Therefore, further studies on work-life balance aspects that affect human psychological well-being should be explored more deeply and expanded to help create a healthy and balanced society.
In Malaysia, the complex interplay between past trauma and BPD is not well-documented, highlighting the need for comprehensive research to understand and alleviate its consequences. This study aimed to explore the prevalence, severity, and types of childhood trauma among individuals with borderline personality disorder (BPD) in Malaysia, using the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ) and Borderline Evaluation Severity over Time (BEST) scale. A total of 39 participants were recruited for this study. Descriptive statistics revealed emotional abuse (M = 18.31, SD = 2.912) and emotional neglect (M = 18.15, SD = 4.356) as the most commonly reported traumas, followed by physical abuse and neglect, with sexual abuse being the least prevalent. A high percentage of participants reported severe emotional and physical abuse, indicating the significant role of emotional trauma in individuals with BPD. However, simple linear regression showed no significant relationship between childhood trauma and BPD (R = 0.057, p = .730), suggesting that childhood trauma does not strongly predict BPD severity in this sample. Due to the small sample size, it is recommended to conduct further studies with a larger, more representative sample to obtain more significant and generalizable results. These findings highlight the need to address emotional trauma in therapeutic and preventive contexts.
2024-12-18T00:00:00+08:00Copyright (c) 2024
