Editorial

The 8th edition marks a significant milestone as we celebrate 30 years since the establishment of Universiti Malaysia Sabah. Over three decades of excellence, this publication proudly reflects on its own eight-year journey as a platform for sharing groundbreaking discoveries, advancing scientific research and knowledge on Malaysia and Borneo’s rich marine heritage, and fostering dialogue within the scientific community.

From the in-depth analysis of the marble goby's otolith shapes to the documentation of the first record of the Sona Sea Catfish, these studies highlight the significance of understanding species diversity and distribution in maintaining ecological balance. To advance human food sustainability, we introduce a paper that paves the way for innovations in aquaculture health management technology through the exploration of functional diets utilizing feeds enriched with cinnamon essential oil.

We also feature pioneering research in environmental sciences and renewable energy, with articles examining the immense potential of Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) in Sabah. Notably, the OTEC study aligns with the Sabah State's key initiatives under the Blue Economy policy framework, reflecting the integration of cutting-edge science with strategic policy goals for sustainable development.

As we celebrate the university’s 30 years and our publication's 8-year journey, this edition stands as a testament to our shared commitment to advancing marine and aquatic sciences. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the researchers, contributors, and readers who continue to inspire and support this mission.

Finally, we invite you to reflect on the cover page of this edition, which portrays a healthy tropical marine ecosystem and the fascinating commensalistic symbiotic relationship between the Spotted Anemone Shrimp Periclimenes brevicarpalis and its vivid blue host, Haddon’s Sea Anemone Stichodactyla haddoni. This underwater image taken at Sepanggar Bay, Kota Kinabalu (Photo © Dr. Mohd Fikri Akmal Bin Mohd Khodzori) serves as both a celebration of the beauty of marine life and a reminder of our collective responsibility to preserve it for future generations.
