Abstract

A minority of the Tobilung ethnic group residing in the Kota Belud district of Sabah still adhere to their traditional beliefs, which were passed down from one generation to another. They believed in various benevolent and malevolent spirits. One of the benevolent spirits is komburongo. The issue identified here is the komburongo has three different identities, that is first, it is a kind of plant, second, a ritual tool and, third a malevolent
spirit. Without knowing all these identities, one does not know the connection between them. Hence this article focuses on the analysis of these three identities of komburongo based on the traditional beliefs of the Tobilung people. To collect data, field trips have been conducted in six Tobilung villages. This study is based on the grounded theory. Data related to the beliefs in komburongo were analyzed based on interpretation and supported by the study of the past. In the analysis, the researchers found that komburongo has three identities, first, it is a plant (Acorus Calamus); second a ritual tool and third, a benevolent spirit. Besides, this study also found that there are various functions of komburongo in the beliefs system of the Tobilung. They relied on the help of komburongo for various spiritual and health problems. This study is deemed important because it highlighted the three different identities of komburongo and its relation to the traditional beliefs system of the Tobilung.
