Abstract

Infodemic is a term used to describe information and pandemics that move along with the spread of facts and information. Fake news is an issue that is no stranger to the world community and Malaysia. This study was conducted
to measure the impact of the spread of false news and the coping strategies of Malaysian students in dealing with it, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic that is raging in Malaysia. As a result of previous studies in Malaysia, the issue of the impact of fake news is very significant in the society, but the studies only measure the spreading of fake news without making a connection with the current issue which is the spreading of fake news during the COVID-19 pandemic in Malaysia. In this study, the researchers used the Impact Event Scale Revised (1997) and Coping Strategy (CSI) instruments to measure the significant relationship between the impact of fake news and student coping strategies during the COVID-19 pandemic in Malaysia. The respondents involved in this study consisted of 217 students at a university in Malaysia. The results of the study indicate that there is a significant relationship between the impact of false news dissemination and student coping strategies during the COVID-19 pandemic. In fact, “Problem Solving” is the best moderator or predictor used by students as a self-defense mechanism against fake news issues.
