Kesantunan berbahasa dalam kalangan generasi muda terutama golongan remaja perlu dititikberatkan kerana penggunaan bahasa yang tidak santun akan mengubah corak dan cara berkomunikasi serta tingkah laku mereka. Oleh hal yang demikian makalah ini bertujuan untuk menjelaskan definisi kesantunan dalam kalangan pelajar universiti dan meninjau amalan kesantunan yang diamalkan ketika berkomunikasi dengan pensyarah semasa mengikuti kelas dalam talian. Kajian ini memberikan tumpuan terhadap kesantunan berbahasa dalam kalangan pelajar di Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) menggunakan pendekatan diskursif, iaitu tafsiran peserta (first-order politeness) sebagai elemen penting yang menentukan definisi kesantunan berbahasa dalam kalangan pelajar. Kajian dijalankan dengan menggunakan kaedah tinjauan soal selidik terhadap 204 orang pelajar untuk mendapatkan maklumat berdasarkan pengetahuan dan pengalaman mengamalkan kesantunan dalam kehidupan seharian sebagai seorang pelajar universiti. Hasil kajian mendapati bahawa pelajar dapat memberikan definisi kesantunan secara universal walaupun terdapat perbezaan definisi kesantunan berbahasa dalam kalangan pelajar disebabkan oleh faktor yang mempengaruhi pemahaman dan amalan mereka tentang kesantunan berbahasa.
Language politeness among the younger generation, especially teenagers, should be emphasized because impolite language will change their patterns and ways of communication, and behavior. Therefore, this paper aims to clarify the definition of politeness among university students and review their politeness practices when communicating with lecturers while attending online classes. This study focuses on language politeness among students at Universiti Malaysia Sabah using a discursive approach namely the interpretation of participants (first-order politeness) as an important element that determines the definition of language politeness among students. The study was conducted using a questionnaire survey method among 204 students to obtain information based on the knowledge of and the experience in practicing politeness in their daily lives as university students. The results of the study found that students can provide a universal definition of politeness even though there are differences in the definition of language politeness among students due to factors that influence their understanding and practice of language politeness.
