Abstract

The increasing number of households in Malaysia is very directly proportional to the increase in the amount of solid waste generated. The amount of solid waste generated in large quantities invites dumping of waste at the landfill which eventually causes the landfill to reach a saturation level and to be closed before reaching its life span. Therefore, the role of the community in reducing the amount of solid waste at landfills is highly encouraged. One of the effective ways to reduce the amount of waste at landfills is through involvement in recycling activities. Therefore, this study was conducted to examine the involvement of households in recycling activities in the administrative area of Tawau Municipal Council (MPT). In addition, household involvement factors and methods of handling household recyclables were also examined. This study employed a quantitative approach where data collection was done through the distribution of questionnaires. Data were analyzed descriptively by looking at the frequency of each variable measured. The results of this study found that the composition of waste produced by households is diverse and boxes are found as the highest recycling material with a total of 29.5 per cent. In addition, aluminium and paper are also the other main choices of households with a total collection of 20.8 per cent and 17.7 per cent respectively. The money factor is the main reason for 32.7 per cent of the households to do recycling activities while the environmental protection factor rank second with a total of 22.42 per cent of the households who did recycling for this factor. There were also households who chose involvement in recycling activities as a charity work (16.37 per cent). A majority of 45.55 per cent of the households’ collected materials would be handed over to collectors free of charge whereas 24 per cent of the households sold their recyclable materials to recycling collection centers and the rest sold theirs to private collectors (23 per cent). The contribution of households in the MPT area in reducing the amount of waste at the Bukit Gemok, Tawau landfill through recycling activities is 0.74 per cent or 67,654 kg per month. The increase in recycling activities among households in the Tawau district can further extend the life of the Bukit Gemok, Tawau landfill.
