Abstract

Animation can be defined as a frame-by-frame image and an illusion of motion created after a rapid movement. Today, the animation sector is regarded as one of the fields that have the potential to improve the country's economy. This study is about gender issues in Malaysian animation films, Geng: The Adventure Begins (2009) and Boboiboy: The Movie (2016) as study samples. The objective of this study was to analyze the representation of male and female characters featured in the films. Social Actor-Network theory was used in completing the study, and the results of the study showed that male representation was more prominent in both films in terms of the number of screens, dialogues, and actions. Male characters were also found to hold a dominant character. Female characters are widely featured as an assistant to the male characters.
