Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • The submission file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, or RTF document file format.
  • Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
  • The text is single-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines.

Author Guidelines

The Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Southeast Asia Maritime (JMAT) invites the submission of manuscripts and articles on topics that align with the journal's scope. Submissions that present new discoveries, offer fresh insights, or explore innovative theoretical perspectives are especially encouraged. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, marine dynamics, maritime security and sovereignty, stateless people, illegal immigration, maritime economy, history and civilisation, underwater archaeology, coastal communities and seafarers, mapping and other maritime-related fields. In addition to research articles, JMAT also publishes field reports and reviews of the latest books related to maritime studies in Southeast Asia and its surrounding reguibs. All submissions are subject to rigorous evaluation by experts. While members of the Editorial Board often serve as reviewers, manuscripts are also reviewed by external experts. Typically, articles undergo review by two scholars (internal and external) in addition to the Editor-in-Chief.

A. The framework of the article should follow the order outlined below:

  1. Abstract - Should be written in one paragraph, between 150 and 200 words and placed on a separate page, before the first page of your article. Along with the abstract, the author should provide 4-5 keywords for indexing purposes.
  2. Introduction - Provide background information about the topic, state the research question or problem, and outline the importance of the study.
  3. Literature Review - Review existing literature related to the research question, highlighting key findings, debates and gaps in knowledge.
  4. Methodology - Describe the research approach, research design, theory and writing framework, and data analysis methods.
  5. Discussion and Results of the Study - Discuss the research framework in line with the purpose of the study, hypothesis, theory and literature review.
  6. Conclusion and Way Forward - Summarise the main findings of the study and their implications, frequently revise the research questions and provide a conclusion.
  7. Bibliography - List all sources used to produce the article whether primary, secondary and oral sources. Arrange the sources according to the priority of the sources in scientific writing.

B. All articles must follow the guidelines as follows:

  1. The text format of the article must be in Microsoft Word (*.doc, *.docx).
  2. The font should be Tahoma, size 113. Line spacing 1.0 (single spacing)
  3. Articles should be written in either Malay or British English
  4. Italics should be used to emphasise foreign words or expressions from the main language of the text.
  5. The title should be a maximum of 8-10 words.
  6. Author's name.
  7. Author’s affiliation and email address.
  8. Abstract (Malay).
  9. Abstract (English).
  10. Provide 5 Keywords.

C. References in the text (In-text citation)

The articles must follow the APA (American Psychological Association) citation style. In-text references should include the author's full name, year of publication and page.
