Transformational leadership of Heads of Science and Mathematics and the use of computers as teaching and learning tools among Science and Mathematics teachers

Kajian ini meninjau kepimpinan transformasi ketua bidang Sains dan Matematik dan penggunaan komputer sebagai alat pengajaran dan pembelajaran dalam kalangan guru pengajaran dan pembelajaran Sains dan Matematik dalam Bahasa Inggeris (PPSMI). Kepimpinan transformasi dilihat dari segi keunggulan gelagat, motivasi yang berinspirasi, merangsang secara intelek dan pertimbangan kepada setiap individu dari persepsi guru-guru PPSMI. Kajian dilakukan melalui kaedah soal selidik terhadap 118 orang guru PPSMI di sekolah menengah di daerah Sandakan. Sampel dipilih berdasarkan pensampelan iaitu mengambil guru PPSMI yang telah berkhidmat sekurang-kurangnya satu tahun di bawah Ketua Bidang Sains dan Matematik sekolah berkenaan. Data kajian dianalisis menggunakan perisian SPPS for Windows version 12.0. Statistik deskriptif dan statistik inferensi seperti korelasi Pearson digunakan. Keputusan kajian mendapati kepimpinan transformasi ketua bidang Sains dan Matematik adalah tinggi (min = 3.06) manakala penggunaan komputer sebagai alat pengajaran dan pembelajaran dalam kalangan guru PPSMI adalah sederhana (min = 2.26). Hubungan antara kepimpinan transformasi adalah sangat lemah dengan penggunaan komputer dalam pengajaran dan pembelajaran (r = 0.186). Antara aspek yang perlu diberi perhatian ialah keupayaan komputer ketua bidang Sains dan Matematik dan keperluan latihan setiap guru PPSMI.
This study reviews the transformational leadership of heads of the Science and Mathematics department and the use of computers as teaching and learning tools among Science and Mathematics teachers teaching in English (PPSMI). Transformational leadership is looked at in terms of excellence in behavior, inspirational motivation, intellectual stimulation, and consideration for each individual from the perspective of PPSMI teachers. The study was conducted using a questionnaire method with 118 PPSMI teachers in secondary schools in the Sandakan district. The sample was selected based on sampling, taking PPSMI teachers who had served at least one year under the head of the Science and Mathematics department of the respective school. The study data was analyzed using SPSS for Windows version 12.0. Descriptive statistics and inferential statistics such as Pearson correlation were used. The study findings found that leadership the transformational leadership of the Heads of Science and Mathematics is high (mean = 3.06), while the use of computers as teaching and learning tools among PPSMI teachers is moderate (mean = 2.26). The relationship between transformational leadership and computer use in teaching and learning is very weak (r = 0.186). Some aspects that need attention are the computer skills of the Heads of Science and Mathematics and the training needs of each PPSMI teacher.
