Abstract

Abstract
The Suluk community is one of the 32 ethnic groups recognised as the natives of Sabah. Despite their status as indigenous peoples and their existence in Sabah long before the formation of Malaysia in 1963, i.e. since hundreds of years ago, the sociological perspective on them remains unchanged. Many still regard the Suluk community as a migrant group or harshly they are labelled as 'Filipino immigrants'. Upon the realisation of the importance of this issue, this paper uses data collected through the interview in focus group discussions (FGD) with the Suluk community in Lahad Datu. The purpose of the interview is to investigate how those negative connotations associated with the identity of the Suluk community are established. The findings show that the negative connotation is due to a lack of understanding among the present generation on the epistemology of migration as well as lack of knowledge on the history of Sabah.
